topic proposal
1) One of the biggest challenges new college students face when living on campus is eating healthy. The combination of homesickness, class schedules, lack of time and resources to prepare food, and possible extracurriculars creates an atmosphere of eating whatever is cheapest and easiest. All students that live on campus are required to have some sort of meal plan, which means that they eat in the market places fairly often. With market place meals, students can eat as much food as they want, and have many different options to choose from.
2) I intend to focus on what the market places' food choices are, and how their options for healthy food are severely lacking. Unhealthy food, such as pizza, grilled cheese, and fries, are always available, but healthy food is much harder to find, especially entrees. The salad bar, raw vegetables, some fruit, and some type of steamed vegetable are usually the most one can find. Studies have shown that students around the country are having the same issue, and say that one of the main barriers to a healthy lifestyle in college is the lack of healthy food available. Bad eating habits can lead to bad physical habits, which leads to obesity. That gives students a bad self-image, which creates depression, which then affects every aspect of their lives.
3) I chose this topic because I believe that the lack of healthy options in market places is a huge problem that can easily be solved by the university. I have been in the same position of so many others, trying to lead a healthy lifestyle at a university that doesn't seem to care very much, despite all the posters they put up about correct portion sizes, and I would like that to change.
