topic proposal
The topic I've chosen is university students' impulse to conform to fit in compared to the Asch experiment of 1951. This topic is important because in today's world, individuality is facilitated and even encouraged. Social media has given young people a platform to express their thoughts freely, and it is important to know how that affects how likely they are to conform to the majority.
Research questions:
1. How does social pressure from a university student's group of peers affect that person to conform?
2. How do these results compare to 1951?
Research Plan:
I am planning on redoing the original Asch Experiment and making just a few changes. This experiment is pretty popular, so I'll be changing the question the person asks the group. The experiment starts out with me asking a group of people to answer a question one-by-one. There is only one actual participant in the group of seven people, the other six are in on what's going on. Each person will answer a simple question, and everyone who knows will say the wrong answer. The participant will answer last, and whether they answer correctly or not will determine whether they were pressured to conform or not. I will most likely ask them to match two colors.
