Experiment plan and questions
I am doing an experiment instead of a survey, so I'll just outline my plan for that.
I want to conduct the experiment in groups of eight, with seven being in on it and 1 not knowing what was going on. I'd need at least ten trials, so that mean ten people who don't know, and anywhere between ten-fifty people who do know, to be able to change out the groups at least somewhat for each trial. I will check to make sure that no one is colorblind and that none of the subjects know about the line experiment, as to not mess up the experiment. I will randomly assign each subject to a group, and will use the same script and colors each time.
The experiment will go like this: I will have four similar colors up on the board together, and one off to the side. The one color will match one of the four. One-by-one, I will ask each person to match the two colors. The seven people who know will answer wrong. The one person who doesn't know will answer last. I will record whether they answer the same as the others or differently. I will also record their gender, which is another variable.
If I need to interview people, I will interview a few who conformed to the group. I will give them the correct answer, then ask them these questions:
1. Did you choose the answer you thought was correct?
2. Why did you choose this answer?
3. Do you feel that you are a conformist; that you usually do what everyone else does?
4. Do you think that your gender affects your urge to conform?
5. How do you think the urge to conform effects university students?
